How can you help?

Become a Puppy Raiser

We are always in need of Puppy Raisers. Having good, reliable Puppy Raisers is key to our success. If you think you have the time and energy to be a Puppy Raiser please get in touch. Read more about what being a Puppy Raiser entails here.

Volunteer for us

Don’t have the time or energy for a puppy but still want to get involved in some way? We still want to hear from you!  Help is always welcome whether it is to hand out leaflets at an event, organise a fundraising activity, give short talks about the work we do, take the dogs for a walk during long events or help update our website! A great deal of work goes into training a service dog and everyone’s input is appreciated.

Fundraise for us

Each service dog cost approximately €15,000 to train and maintain but they are given to our clients at no charge (subject to terms and conditions). Funds are always needed. If you are interested in holding a fundraising activity to help us out, please do get in touch.  We will help you in any way we can. Some people throw parties and donate all the proceeds. Others come up with other innovative ways  to collect money. Every little helps!

Needless to say, donations are always welcome!  You can donate directly to the Service Dogs Malta Foundation HSBC account 039 -153952 - 001.

  What is a Puppy Raiser?

Puppy Raisers are a vital link in the services we offer. Puppy Raisers take in a puppy which has the temperament and potential to be trained as a service dog and, for approximately the first year of its life, take care of it as if it were their own. They train it and socialise it and, when the time comes, hand the puppy back to us to begin its formal training as a service dog. It takes a special person to do all this and what makes it even more special is that these people do it all on a voluntary basis.

So what does becoming a puppy walker involve?

The Puppy Raisers’ job is to provide a home environment for the puppy, teach it basic commands and expose it to as many different situations as possible at a young age in order to prepare it for its future role as a service dog. The Puppy Raisers will be provided with a socialisation programme and will be supported by our trainers throughout.

  • You could be what we are looking for if:
  • You have the time to socialise a puppy.
  • You are willing to follow a training / socialisation programme.
  • You have suitable transport to take the puppy around.
  • You are willing to attend puppy training classes.
  • You are able to part with the puppy when your work is done.

For our part, we commit ourselves to providing veterinary care, food, obedience training and 24-hour support thanks to our sponsors and volunteers.
